How MAIO scores a page

MAIO GEO Scanner reads one public page and runs a fixed set of checks on it. Each check looks for a signal that helps AI assistants find, read and quote a page. This page lists what is checked and what the score does and does not mean.

The overall score

  • Each category is scored from 0 to 100 from its checks, each worth a fixed share of the category's points. The overall score is the average of the category scores, rounded to a whole number.
  • Bands: 90 and above is Excellent, 70 to 89 is Good, 40 to 69 is Fair, and below 40 is Needs Improvement.
  • The scan reads the page's initial HTML. If the page builds its content in the browser, MAIO reports that it cannot score it instead of showing a misleading number.

What each category checks

  • Crawler access (called Crawl Intelligence in the MAIO apps). Whether a robots.txt file exists, whether twelve named AI crawlers are allowed to read the site, whether an XML sitemap is found, and whether the sitemap carries last-modified dates.
  • Answer-ready content (called Answer Surfaces in the MAIO apps). FAQ structured data, question-and-answer blocks, a definition or summary near the top, structured lists and tables.
  • Metadata and structured data (called Semantic Signals in the MAIO apps). Whether JSON-LD structured data is present and uses valid types, the Open Graph title, description and type tags, and an llms.txt file. llms.txt is not scored on Shopify, and Open Graph type is not scored on Webflow, where the platform cannot set it.
  • Images and media (called Multimodal Context in the MAIO apps). Descriptive alt text, the share of images that have it, figure captions, videos and transcripts. Figure captions are not scored on Shopify.
  • Freshness signals (called Temporal Grounding in the MAIO apps). A Last-Modified header, a visible publish date, a visible updated date, other freshness indicators and time-based structured data. Not part of the Shopify profile.
  • Authorship and trust (called Trust Markers in the MAIO apps). A named author, a named reviewer, outbound links, links to authoritative sources and a references section. Not part of the Shopify profile.
  • Merchant trust (called Merchant Trust in the MAIO apps). Whether the store links its refund, privacy, shipping, terms and subscription policies, and shows contact and about information. Shopify profile only.

Scoring profiles

Pages are scored with a profile that matches their platform. WordPress, Wix and Webflow pages use the six categories above. Shopify pages use five: Crawler access, Answer-ready content, Metadata and structured data, Images and media, and Merchant trust. If the scan finds no clear evidence of a platform, it uses the general WordPress profile by default and says so. Compare scores only between pages scored with the same profile.

What the score does not tell you

  • It does not measure real AI rankings or promise that a change will get the page cited.
  • It checks one page, not a whole site, and it never changes your website.
  • A signal reported as not detected means the scan did not find it in the scanned HTML. It is not proof that the signal is absent from the site.
  • Suggested improvements are candidates based on what was observed. They are not ranked and they are not a full audit. Some, such as FAQ markup or an author name, only apply to certain kinds of page.
